Previous to that, he loved notable success as lead singer and songwriter for The Feeling, whose debut album Twelve Stops and House reached quantity two on the UK charts in 2006 earlier than their second album, Be a part of With Us, cracked the highest spot in 2008.
That very same thread of catchy, upbeat rock is obvious in All people’s Speaking About Jamie, which noticed Sells lauded by the musical theatre group, with the present selecting up 5 Olivier Award nominations in 2018, together with for Sells’ music and for finest new musical.

‘When you’ve received a narrative that’s doing a factor, and you recognize you’ve received to alter it into a unique model of that story, you simply hope and dream that the entire thing survives the method,’ he explains. ‘And with movies, you’ve received a complete new field of toys to play with, and I feel that was what was so sensible for us was to have this chance to experiment and simply strive retelling our story and take a look at deepening our story.’
The underside line? ‘We’re hoping that we may simply be much more exact and much more truthful to Jamie.’
And talking of the brand new field of toys, Sells was excited to kick issues up a gear, musically talking, with the musical hitting dwelling film screens.
‘I got to work with an orchestra which is gorgeous for me – there’s no approach I may match 20 strings within the Apollo Theatre, even when I wished to! And it wanted to have scope and scale, and wanted to be cinematic, and it was an awesome alternative to do this.’
He continues: ‘That’s to not say that theatre hasn’t received its personal factor happening – theatre is a residing factor that occurs on stage each single night time, so it’s received its personal magic. After which cinema has to have a unique form of magic.’
Film magic is definitely offered by all-new tune This Was Me for Richard E Grant’s character Hugo Battersby, aka Jamie’s (newcomer Max Harwood) drag queen mentor Loco Channelle. The quantity, which gives the context of challenges that London’s queer scene confronted within the Nineteen Eighties was – in keeping with Sells – ‘something we always wished that we could achieve’.
‘In the movie we knew we could do a literal flashback to this backstory of Hugo’s and to provide Jamie a form of sense of what drag could possibly be and what it may imply above simply dressing up and being fabulous. We felt prefer it may deliver a little bit of stakes to it and educate Jamie a little bit of historical past and provides him a way of drag being extra political than simply that.
‘I think to be able to achieve that, we needed to be in film.’

And we felt like Holly’s voice was simply the precise voice for that, the precise voice to form of inform that story.’
Johnson is joined by different musical visitor stars on the All people’s Speaking About Jamie film soundtrack, together with Chaka Khan, Becky Hill, Sells’ bandmates from The Feeling and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who’s married to the group’s bass guitarist, Richard Jones.

And Sophie, after all – she’s household, she’s an icon. Why wouldn’t I ask her to return and be a part of it?’
Sells praises ‘the new generation coming through’, in reference to Hill, and continues: ‘The idea is that it connects people across generations, and I think that’s a pleasant factor to replicate in our soundtrack in addition to in our story.’
